Frequently Asked Questions About Assisted Living

At The Village at Cedar Hill, we understand that choosing the right senior living option comes with many questions. Whether you're exploring assisted living for yourself or a loved one, it’s important to feel informed and confident in your decision. Below, we've answered some of the most common questions families ask about life at Cedar Hill—covering everything from services and amenities to costs and what makes our community unique. If you don’t see your question here, we’re always just a phone call away and happy to help!

  • What is assisted living?

Assisted living is a residential lifestyle designed for older adults who are mostly independent but may need help with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, medication management, meals, or housekeeping. At Cedar Hill, residents enjoy support when needed, along with a safe, comfortable, and engaging environment.

  • Who is a good fit for assisted living?

Assisted living is ideal for individuals who want to maintain independence while benefiting from a little extra help and a strong sense of community. It’s a great option for those who no longer want the responsibilities of homeownership or need support managing everyday routines.

  • What services are included?

Residents at Cedar Hill receive personal care assistance, three home-cooked meals per day, housekeeping, laundry services, transportation for appointments and outings, medication management, social activities, and access to 24/7 staff.

  • How is assisted living different from a nursing home?

Assisted living provides support with daily living while allowing residents to stay active and independent. Nursing homes (or skilled nursing facilities) offer more intensive, around-the-clock medical care for individuals with complex health needs.

  • Can I bring my own furniture and belongings?

Absolutely. We encourage residents to bring furniture, personal décor, family photos, and other cherished items to make their apartment feel just like home.

  • Are pets allowed?

Yes, Cedar Hill is a pet-friendly community! We welcome small dogs, cats, and other animals with prior approval. Our residents enjoy regular visits from family pets and therapy animals—and we’ve even had baby farm animals visit! We believe pets add joy and companionship to daily life.

  • How much does assisted living cost?

Monthly rent varies depending on apartment size, level of care, and services provided. Cedar Hill offers flexible pricing with no large upfront buy-in, making it easier to preserve your savings while receiving the care you need.

  • How do families typically pay for assisted living?

Most residents use a combination of personal savings, Social Security, pension or retirement income, long-term care insurance, and veterans’ benefits. In some cases, Medicaid may be available for those who qualify.

  • Can couples live together in assisted living?

Yes! We offer shared apartments for couples who wish to stay together, even if their care needs are different.

  • What happens if care needs change over time?

As a continuing care community, Cedar Hill allows residents to transition seamlessly to memory care or skilled nursing—without needing to move to another facility. This ensures peace of mind for both residents and families.

  • What does a typical day look like?

Each day offers a rich variety of choices—delicious meals, wellness classes, creative activities, musical events, social gatherings, outings, and quiet time. Residents are encouraged to participate at their own pace and comfort level.

  • How will I know when it's time for assisted living?

Signs include difficulty with personal care, increasing isolation, forgetfulness, falls, or trouble managing meals, medications, or housekeeping. Our team is happy to help you evaluate whether assisted living is the right next step.

  • What is Cedar Hill’s “Continuum of Care”?

Cedar Hill offers a full range of care services—including independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing—on one beautiful campus. This means residents can "age in place," moving between levels of care as their needs change, while staying in the same familiar and supportive environment.

  • Can my loved one keep their personal physician?

Yes. Residents can continue seeing their existing physician if the practice is within a reasonable distance. We also have a contracted physician who makes regular house calls, and we recommend establishing a backup physician with hospital privileges.

  • When can I visit my family member?

Anytime! We welcome and encourage family visits and love when loved ones participate in events and activities. Family is a vital part of our community.

  • Are religious services offered?

Yes. We support all residents in maintaining an active faith life. We offer on-site services led by a local church pastor, and regular visits from Catholic clergy. Some residents also attend services at local churches.

  • What if my loved one isn't very social or active?

We gently encourage each resident to engage in community life in ways that suit their personality. Even passive participation—such as enjoying music events or visiting with local schoolchildren in our Adopt-a-Grandparent program—can provide meaningful connection. We also offer outings like walks, gardening, van rides, and festivals.

  • Do residents go on outings in the local community?

Yes! Outings are an important part of life at Cedar Hill. Residents enjoy shopping trips, lunch outings, scenic drives, seasonal festivals, and cultural events throughout Vermont and New Hampshire.

  • Is there an entrance fee at Cedar Hill?

No. Cedar Hill does not require a large upfront entrance or “buy-in” fee. Residents pay monthly for the level of care and services they choose. This approach gives families greater flexibility and peace of mind.

  • What makes Cedar Hill different from other assisted living communities?

Cedar Hill is a family-owned and Vermont-based continuing care community. Our full continuum of care, small-town warmth, and dedicated staff create a uniquely personal experience. Residents receive care from a familiar team, all on one connected campus—from independent living to dignified end-of-life care.

  • Is Cedar Hill a licensed Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)?

While we provide continuing care services on one campus, Cedar Hill is not a CCRC as defined under Vermont law. We do not require a continuing care contract or upfront life-care payment. Instead, we offer month-to-month agreements, and we’re regulated by the Vermont Department of Licensing and Protection, not the Department of Financial Regulation.
